Evergreen Cemetery

Evergreen Cemetery is a beautiful, historic, terraced cemetery which opened in 1852. It is best known for the SaSaNa Loft Monument, a 17-foot obelisk commemorating the death of a young, Native American woman who died in a train accident in 1850’s. The Monument sits at the summit of the cemetery where a scenic overlook offers an expansive view of the Village of Owego and Susquehanna River. Other points of interest include a gravestone marking the final resting place of 14 members of five local families with an unusually long and poetic epitaph, the grave of Elizabeth Chatfield, Private Secretary to Susan B. Anthony, and the Civil War section.

A brochure of notable graves and a map is available at the Tioga County Tourism Office and HERE.
