Carantouan Greenway

On-road and woodland biking, hiking, birding and boating along a complex of trails, parks and amenities that follow the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers in the Penn-York Valley.  Trails pass through diverse habitat providing some habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. Trails and trees are marked for identification.

Carantouan Greenway Forbidden Path – A 1/2 mile trail with a spring and woodlands in the village of Waverly.  The Forbidden Path Trail requires that you go over the embankment to the trailhead.  It parallels the RR tracks and ends at the Carantouan Spring, a historic Andaste Indian site.  You must use your imagination to picture how in past days of necessity, it was the source of fresh water for traveling hunters. Access: At the junction of NY Rt. 17C and PA Rt. 220 in Waverly, NY, Look for the ‘Trails of Tioga’ sign on the SW corner. Park in a legal spot along Broad Street near Ted Clark’s Busy Market and carefully walk west across Rt. 220.  Go down the embankment to the trailhead.

Carantouan Greenway River Road Trail – This scenic road follows the Chemung River west out of Waverly. This is a one-way road for cars, but two-way for bikes, rollerblading and strolling along this newly paved and reconfigured scenic road.  Access: River Road is located directly opposite the entrance ramp for NY Rt. 17 west, off PA Rt. 220. For bikers who require parking, park in a legal spot along Broad Street near Ted Clark’s Busy Market and proceed west across Rt. 220.

Carantouan Greenway Wildwood Nature Reserve – Enjoy 1.2 miles with a spring, pond, marsh, woods and meadow. Trails and trees are marked for identification.  Tree trail guides may be picked up at local Valley libraries or contacting the Greenway directly.  Trails pass through diverse habitat providing some habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. Access: Located east of Waverly, NY on Shepard Road in the Town of Barton, Wildwood can be accessed from Rt. 17C in NY or Cayuta Street in Milltown, PA.  Shepard Road is 3.5 miles east of the junction of NY Rt. 17C and PA Rt. 220 in Waverly. Drive east on Rt. 17C and turn right on Shepard Rd.  Wildwood is 0.5 miles south on Shepard Road.  At the Wildwood sign, turn left to access the parking lot.
